Healthy Trilece Recipe

In all honesty, Trilece has always been my weakness, but most of the time, it is a sugar bomb. So I thought I would play around in the kitchen a bit and create this Healthy Trilece recipe. It tastes dreamy and will not ruin your diet. It is light and fluffy with a delicate sweetness. This recipe is for you, whether you are looking to keep sugar low in your diet or simply want a guiltless dessert.
What is Healthy Trilece All About?
Trileche is used to refer to the sponge cake soaked or dipped with three types of milk, and in Spanish known as “Tres Leches”. Traditionally, this is pure sin in sugar, which is then served as Healthy Trilece. This dessert is buttery, creamy, and melts in your mouth, but uses very little sugar and lighter ingredients. The texture is soft, airy, and satisfying without weighing it down, and is just perfect for an indulgent, but not completely crashing, sweet treat.
Ingredients
For the sponge cake:
- 4 large eggs
- 1/3 cup coconut sugar or any unrefined sugar
- 1/2 cup almond flour
- 1/4 cup oat flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the milk soak:
- 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 1/2 cup low-fat milk or oat milk
- 1/3 cup light coconut milk
- 1 tbsp maple syrup or honey (optional)
For the whipped topping:
- 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9×9-inch baking dish with parchment paper.
- In a medium mixing bowl, beat the eggs and sugar for 4-5 minutes using an egg beater until the batter appears somewhat light and fluffy.
- Gently fold in the almond flour, oat flour, baking powder, and vanilla. Do not overmix the batter.
- Spread the batter into the prepared dish and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool for 10 minutes, then poke small holes in the top with a fork.
- Mix the three milks and maple syrup in a bowl, then pour over the cake in a slow stream, allowing it time to soak in. Place in the fridge for at least 2 hours, but overnight is better.
- Prepare the topping by combining the yogurt, honey, and vanilla until the mixture is smooth.
- Spread the topping all over the soaked cake immediately before serving.
Storage Tips
- Cover and store the cake for 4 days in the fridge.
- No freezing, as dairy and soaked cakes tend to suffer in the freezer.
Serving Suggestions
- Top with fresh berries or a sprinkle of cinnamon.
- Serve straight from the fridge, chilled.
- Perfect after a light dinner or as a weekend treat
Pro Tips & Variations
- Want it dairy-free? Use all plant-based milks and coconut yogurt.
- Add a shot of espresso for another layer of flavor in the milk mix.
- If you are eliminating all sugars, use monk fruit or stevia.
